Why need to close 5G on router when using smart room thermostat?
May 23, 2025
Recently, the routers mainly are dual-band in one means that a router can support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals. This function defaults to the same wireless signal name and password for the 2.4G and 5G bands. When the wireless terminal connects to the router to access the Internet, it will automatically choose to connect to 2.4G or 5G according to the network conditions to achieve the best Internet experience. Therefore, it is generally not recommended for customers to turn off the "Wi-Fi Multi-Band" function.
But if you do not turn off the dual-band integration function, mobile phones and computers will automatically connect to the 5G band of the router; smart home appliances such as room thermostats, sweeping robots, refrigerators, fans, and water heaters generally only support 2.4G, so they will automatically connect to the 2.4G band. At this time, the smart home devices will not be able to connect to the mobile phone app. This is why we recommend turning off the 5G band of the router when configuring the thermostat and other smart home appliances.

Many customers have chosen to turn off 5G on their mobile phones, but why the network configuration still fails? The reason is that the 5G band of the router is not turned off. This setting needs to be set in the management interface of the router, not on the mobile phone. Regardless of whether the mobile phone chooses 2.4G or 5G, if the router does not turn off the dual-band integration function, it will still automatically switch to 5G, and the thermostat network configuration will fail.
Beok have many smart devices include WiFi Room Thermostats andSmart TRV, they all support 2.4Ghz frequency only, so when connect them with WiFi, please close your 5Ghz WiFi on your router, that is very important!
But how to turn off the router's 5G? The settings of different router brands are different. You need to consult the router seller for details. Below we can take the TPLink router as an example to explain how to turn off 5G WiFi.
